There was once a poem written by Myra Welch Brooks “The Touch of the Master’s Hand” is the inspiration for this post along with the help of my Dad’s sermon outline “The Touch of the Master” We will be looking at 3 Touch’s of The Master. The Text will be taken from 1 Samuel 10:26
“And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.”
‘Twas battered and scarred and the auctioneer
Thought it scarcely worth his while
To waste much time on the old violin,
But he held it up with a smile.
“What am I bid, good folk?” he cried.
“Who’ll start the bidding for me?
A dollar, a dollar … now two … only two …
Two dollars, and who’ll make it three?
“Three dollars once, three dollars twice,
Going for three” … but no!
From the room far back a gray-haired man
Came forward and picked up the bow.
Then wiping the dust from the old violin
And tightening up the strings,
He played a melody pure and sweet,
As sweet as an angel sings.
The music ceased, and the auctioneer,
With a voice that was quiet and low,
Said, “What am I bid for the old violin?”
As he held it up with the bow.
“A thousand dollars … and who’ll make it two?
Two…two thousand, and who’ll make it three?
Three thousand once and three thousand twice …
Three thousand and gone!” said he.
The people cheered, but some exclaimed
“We do not quite understand …
What changed it’s worth?” and the answer came:
” ‘Twas the touch of the master’s hand.” ~ Myra Brooks Welch
The Saving Touch of the Master!
Luke 19:10 – For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
God tells us “…is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem?”- Isa. 50:2 (there is not one person that He cannot redeem to Himself) it also says in Isa. 59:1- “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither is his ear heavy, that it cannot hear.” Many people believe and think it is what they do or how they live (if I am good enough, I will go to heaven, yet the Bible tells us in Ephesians 2:5 “Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)” also in vs 8&9 of same chapter 8- For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9- Not of works, lest any man should boast. (It is the Touch of the Master, we just have to accept the gift.)
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12
The Comforting Touch of the Master!
“If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”
What a great blessing we all have knowing that if we accept His Perfect Gift of the Master’s Touch, that he gives us comfort. Isa. 9:6 tells us …his name shall be called wonderful, counsellor…the Prince of Peace. In Psalm 23:4 he comforts us by telling us “yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” It is hard to understand sometimes how we can have comfort and peace in some of the hardest and rough times in our lives, but His Word is Truth and there have been many times in my own life that this verse Phillipians 4:7 held True “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” it was only by The Touch of the Master!
The Healing Touch of The Master!
“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” This one verse alone helped me through a very trying time in my life, when in my own mind seemed hopeless, and I am sure it can yours as well. It takes the Touch of the Master to help save; comfort and heal us. James 5:15a tells us “And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up;….” I believe this is more than just being sick in health, but also sick in soul as well, as we have seen in the above two touches of the Master, that He can also heal us from our helpless lost state, and heal us when we feel alone and need comforted. James 15:6b tells us …“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
There are so many examples through the Bible and in history of The Healing Touch of the Master, I encourage you to know the Touch of The Master. These following verses are some of my favorite in all of the Bible, and gives me confidence.
John 14:1-3 “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
As in the poem we started with, many people and even ourselves may think we are not worth much, yet when we are “Touched by the Master” there is a whole new outlook, each and every life is worth so very much.
