What To Do When You Don’t Know What To Do

We all from time to time come to a place of not knowing what to do. People who do not know what to do often make rash decisions and rush into actions which later bring regret and disappointment.

Lets see what can be done to help!

As a Christian we do have help, The Lord has given us His Word to help in our everyday life, and is The Source in times of we are needing to know what to do when we do not know what to do. We will be looking at 4 things we can do when we do not know what to do.

Be Patient!

When we are unsure about what steps to take, we should exercise patience. We are told in Hebrews 10:35-36  “Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.”

(Proverbs 3:5-6) “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. This is not always the easiest thing to do, because we tend to want to rely completely on our own knowledge or thoughts on the matter. The more we study the Word of God the more we understand the following-  (Psalms 37:23a) “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD:” We should delay making important decisions that could change the direction of our lives.

(James 1:3-4) “Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience, but let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”  At times our trials or circumstances arise in our life as a tool that works for us to perfect patience in our lives and to rely completely on the direction of the Lord. He wants the very best for each and everyone of His children, and this can only be achieved in our allowing Him to control and direct our decisions and lives. The word perfect in this verse is meaning complete or completeness, in other words, if we have complete patience and allow God to work, we will not be lacking in the fact we are making the correct and right decisions.

Be Prayerful!

We sometimes become so engulfed in trying to decide, that we fail to ask God for His guidance. If we are to come to a right decision, we must ask God, listen to God, obey God, and wait on God’s time.

(Philippians 4:6) “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” we do this and the result can be found in the very next verse. (Philippians 4:7) “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

What a great feeling it is when you follow what the Lord wants in our life and follow His instructions that He will give us a peace in our decisions in our lives.

Be Positive!

Not knowing what to do often brings discouragement and self-pity. When we allow negative thoughts to grow in our minds, they soon take over like a cancer, we can stay positive by doing the above 2 things in being patient and being prayer add the being positive knowing that in due time God will work out His plan, and help us when we need to know what to do when we don’t know what to do. Paul writes in in his letter to the Phillippians some things to do to help us stay positive.(Philippians 4:8) “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”  Think on these and it is very hard to let the negative things in life to influence us.

It is hard staying positive by listening to the wrong advice or wrong counsel. (Psalms 1:1a) “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly,” This word Blessed here simply means (made happy or prosperous). Listening to wrong advice will not leave you happy nor prosperous. We all need good counsel at times, some more often than others; good counsel can be found in His Word and in Prayer, but also in good Godly men and woman. ( If the counsel you are receiving goes against what the Bible says, it is a great sign that it is the wrong counseling you are receiving and should not be taken). When taking the correct and right counsel has a result as well. (Psalms 1:2-3) “But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. {3} And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

While we are being Patient, Prayerful and Positive we must

Be Productive!

(1 John 3:18b) “let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”

(1 Corinthians 15:58) “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”

We should be patient, but we should also stay busy.

When you don’t know what to do, do something for God.

occupy till I come” (Luke 19:13)
